About
Hey, I’m Jake
I’m the person behind Disc Golf Mentor. The one writing all this stuff, filming the videos, probably overthinking my disc selection at Milo McIver right now while you’re reading this. Quick stats: 38 years old, based in Tigard, Oregon. PDGA #87412, currently rated 932 (peaked at 941, still bitter about a bad tournament in Estacada that dropped me). I throw predominantly backhand — my forehand is a work in progress, we don’t need to talk about it. How I Got Here I played ultimate frisbee at Oregon State until I blew out my shoulder junior year. Surgery, physical therapy, the whole thing. During rehab in 2016, my PT suggested disc golf as a way to throw again without the cutting and diving that destroyed my shoulder in the first place. I was skeptical. Frisbees at baskets? But I tried it and got hooked embarrassingly fast. First round at Pier Park, I hit approximately 400 trees and lost a disc in some bushes and somehow left thinking “yeah, I’m definitely doing this again.” For six years I taught high school PE while playing disc golf obsessively on the side. Got better, played tournaments, started helping newer players at my local courses just because I liked explaining things. Turns out the teaching background from PE translated pretty well to coaching disc golf. Who knew. In 2022 I left teaching to do disc golf coaching full-time. It was terrifying and also the best decision I’ve made. Now I get to help people throw plastic at baskets for a living, which is objectively kind of ridiculous and also deeply satisfying. Why This Site Exists When I started playing, I found a lot of disc golf content online that was either too technical (flight physics that made my eyes glaze over) or too vague (“just throw it smooth!” okay but
HOW). There wasn’t much that felt like actual coaching — specific, practical, here’s-what-to-do-this-afternoon kind of stuff. Disc Golf Mentor is my attempt to fill that gap. Real advice from someone who’s still learning. Drills you can do today. Honest gear recommendations instead of marketing hype. Local course knowledge from someone who actually plays these courses year-round in PNW rain. I’m not a touring pro. I’m not pretending to have all the answers. I’m a 930s-rated player who has spent a lot of time thinking about how to get better at this sport and a lot of time teaching others what I’ve learned. That’s the perspective I’m offering. The Personal Stuff I live with my husband Brendan (a physical therapist who throws forehand-only because he’s chaotic like that) and our anxious rescue greyhound, Noodle. Brendan gets mentioned in articles a lot because he’s a useful example of “here’s what not to do” and also because he has strong opinions about disc golf that are frequently wrong. Home courses: Milo McIver, Pier Park, Blue Lake, Dabney. I play year-round, rain or shine, though I complain about the rain constantly. Oregon winters build character, or so I tell myself while my shoes fill with mud. Get in Touch I read everything that comes through the contact form. Can’t promise quick responses — I’m one person — but I genuinely want to hear from you. Questions, feedback, topic requests, whatever. If you’re in the Portland area and want to connect in person, come to league at Milo on Tuesdays. I’m usually there. I’m the one with too many Buzzzes in my bag arguing that you don’t need a Destroyer. Thanks for being here. Now go practice your putting.
